When Team USA takes the field on June 12 against England in Rustenburg, South Africa during group play in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, parishioners from St. Paul Parish in Damascus will be rooting for one of their own. Defender Oguchi Onyewu attends Mass at St. Paul's when he is home with his parents, Peter and Dorothy Onyewu. The Onyewus also have two other sons and two daughters. The family have been members of the parish since 2004, said Sherrie Wade, director of social concerns there. "It's very obvious their faith is important to them," she added. Five teams were crowned as champions in the March 21 Catholic Youth Organization Mid-Atlantic City Championship basketball tournament, held at St. John's College High School in Washington. In the varsity girls' championship game, the Shrine of St. Jude in Rockville defeated Holy Family, Hillcrest Heights, 42-40. In the varsity boys' championship game, Holy Family in Hillcrest Heights defeated St. Jerome, Hyattsville, 57-54. As DeMatha's former coach Morgan Wootten - a member of basketball's Hall of Fame - took the microphone and addressed the sold-out crowd at Morgan Wootten Gymnasium on Feb. 25, on the last night the Stags would play on that court, the DeMatha student section astutely began to chant "This is his house!" The 60 year-old facility at the all-boys' Catholic high school in Hyattsville was just like the man whose name the court carries - legendary. During the 2010 Winter Olympics, most ski runs on the Whistler Blackcomb venue will remain open, and Msgr. Jerry Desmond from Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in Whistler plans to take advantage of the opportunity.
